How to Manage a Child's Toothache

There is no greater feeling of helplessness than knowing that your child is suffering and there's very little you can do about it. Toothaches can be especially painful and while your child may be in pain, we're here to tell you that there are several things that you can do to ease that pain while your child is waiting to come and see us! First Thing's First If you do notice that your child is suffering from tooth pain, the very first thing you should do is call our office. We will ask you a few questions to determine if it's an emergency situation such as an injury or a broken tooth. By letting us know the situation and assessing the discomfort, we can do our best to accommodate your child's needs and get them in to see us as soon as possible. After you've made your appointment, it's time to begin helping your child manage their discomfort. Toothaches can feel never-ending when you're a child. Depending on your child's age, they may not be able to comprehend that there is an end in sight and that the constant throbbing they're feeling will eventually go away. As a parent, there are a few things you can try at home to lessen the pain of a toothache that may be caused by erosion or decay. Being cautious not to use water that is too hot or too cold, try a salt water rinse with your child. Add just a teaspoon of regular table salt to some warm water and have your child rinse their mouth. This can help relieve tenderness. Cold packs applied to the outside of the cheek can also be helpful in relieving discomfort. If your child is older, there are many over-the-counter pain relievers that are available. After you call and make your child's appointment, ask us and we'll point you in the right direction to begin making your child more comfortable....
