Does Your Child's Toothpaste Flavor Make a Difference?
Posted on 11/10/2019 by Fariba Mutschler
From the time your bundle of joy starts teething, it's only natural for a parent to want to know what the best way of maintaining their child's oral health is. However, the American Dental Association recommends that you should begin this journey as soon as the teeth can be brushed. However, baby toothpaste is quite different from the adult one. That's in terms of composition and flavor. To encourage the child to brush their teeth, toothpaste manufacturers give children toothpastes a nice flavor. However, the biggest question usually is whether one flavor is superior to the others. And the answer is no. Toothpaste Composition Since the baby's teeth are growing, there is quite a lot the child hasn't come into contact with. Therefore, toothpastes labeled for children contain a lot less cleaning agents than adult ones. Toothpastes designed for children do not have any harsh chemicals and whitening agents that can easily hurt the developing enamel of the child's teeth. These toothpastes also don't have some ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which can cause problems for some children. Flavors Toothpastes made for children have to be made in such a way that will attract children and keep them coming for the same once the toothpaste is finished. To this end, manufacturers use mild, sweet flavors such as fruity ones and bubble gum which are flavors children like. Children should also keep away from adult toothpastes because they have much stronger flavors such as mint and cinnamon which children don't like too much since it gives off a burning sensation. Fluoride Once the child can spit out the toothpaste, it's important to use toothpastes that have a little fluoride in them. This compound is crucial to oral health as it prevents tooth decay. However, if you are unsure about introducing toothpaste with fluoride to your young one, you can always consult us to give you the green light or not. When it comes to maintaining a child's oral health, it's crucial to ensure that they brush their teeth. One way of incentivizing them to do this is by allowing them to choose the flavor they like so that they can look forward to the activity. If you have any concerns on this front, you can always schedule an appointment with us and we'll iron everything out....
