How Early Can Gum Disease Start?

Gum disease, known as periodontal disease, is not just your grandparent's problem. It can occur in children as well. Teens can be diagnosed with periodontal disease, so as a parent, it is important for you to work together with us to know the warning signs and bring your teen in for regular checkups and cleanings.

What Is Gum Disease and What Causes It?

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the bone and tissue supporting the teeth and if left untreated can cause the teeth to fall out. It's generally caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria. The toxins in plaque irritate the gums and this causes damage. Regular brushing, flossing and routine visits to come see us will help you and your teenager, keep the plaque at bay and this will greatly reduce your risk of developing gum disease.
Teens can be at risk for gum disease if they're not brushing regularly, have braces and don't take care of them or have a poor diet. Additionally, other medical problems can put your teen at risk. Children who have Down's Syndrome, Type 1 Diabetes have a much higher risk of developing periodontal disease.

The number one cause of gum disease is tobacco. This will put you or your child at a much higher risk for severe and early gum disease. In addition to causing bad breath and stained or discolored enamel on the teeth, smoking is the leading cause of gum disease. Our patients who smoke cigarettes are more likely to have tartar build up, plaque and show signs of gum disease.

If you of your teen notice that they have bleeding gums when they floss or brush, they may already have the beginnings of gum disease. Give us a call as soon as you notice a problem. Regular cleanings and visits with us are your best defense against gum disease!
