Are Dental X-Rays Safe For Children?

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Fariba Mutschler
Are Dental X-Rays Safe For Children? Most concern in many parents with children suffering from dental issues is the safety of their children when x-ray procedures are involved. It is common to see worried parents when a dentist tells them that an x-ray procedure will be done on their children.

However, x-rays in children are essential for the early detection of diseases and providing solutions for dental replacements and restoration procedures. Also, the amount of radiation used is minimal since x-ray equipment with advanced digital technology reduces radiation compared to older devices.

What Types of Dental Problems are Identified Using X-Rays?

There are many types of dental problems that are identified by X-Rays. Dental x-rays are essential in a variety of situations, such as what we describe below.

Diagnosis of Disease and Infection

Some dental diseases and infections are not easily identified with routine checkups; hence, a dental radiation procedure is used to diagnose early. In addition, dentists can provide an effective treatment plan for the child.

Identification of Dental Caries

Tooth decay is not always found during a routine exam. X-rays allow the dentists to find tooth decay in places that are hard to reach in the child's mouth.

Extraction of the Wisdom Teeth

X-rays enable dentists to know if an impacted tooth in the child needs extraction immediately to prevent severe dental problems.

When should a Patient get an X-Ray?

The frequency with which the X-rays are done depends on the current state of oral health, the age, the risk of caries that the child may have, and signs and symptoms that make the dentist doubt any disease that may be developing.

Generally, it is essential to see a dental specialist in case your child experiences the above issues for possible radiation prevention measures.

My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
