Times Where Kids Teeth May Require Extractions

Posted on 1/20/2020 by Fariba Mutschler
Times Where Kids Teeth May Require ExtractionsLosing a baby tooth is normally exciting for a child, as they recognize it as an essential part of growing up and a precursor to a visit from the tooth fairy. Although going through the process of losing primary teeth and getting permanent ones is an essential rite of passage, sometimes a child will need to have a tooth extracted for other reasons.

If your child needs a tooth extracted, however, there's no need for alarm. Our office can provide a safe and comfortable procedure that benefits your child's overall oral health.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction in Children

There are numerous reasons that your child might need a tooth extraction, including severe damage or decay. Additionally, your child may need the extraction of a stubborn baby tooth that's impeding the eruption of permanent teeth and can cause orthodontic issues in the future. Finally, extraction is sometimes required in preparation for orthodontic treatment, to allow room for teeth to shift.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

In order to dispel any myths dramatizing the tooth extraction procedure, it's important to emphasize to your child that they will be safe and comfortable during the process, which is very straightforward and typically less involved than for an adult.

Once we've taken an x-ray to examine your child's tooth roots and condition of their jawbone, we administer a local anesthetic before extraction. In some cases, we may need to remove some gum tissue to allow for pulling the tooth, which may require nitrous oxide or IV sedation.

Getting a tooth extracted can be scary to your child and concerning to you as well. Our staff is well-trained in the unique dental needs of children and how to communicate with them to ease their fears. My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
