Foods Pregnant Mothers Should Consume to Benefit the Oral Development of their BabyLet us start by saying, Congratulations on expecting the newest member of your family! What an exciting time in your life, preparing and learning about this new person that will be joining you before long.

There are so many things that you as an expecting mother can do to prepare for your baby, everything from purchasing and installing car seats to changing your eating habits. Did you know that the choices you make when you're pregnant can have a direct effect on the oral development of your baby? Let's look at some of the best things you can eat to guarantee that your baby (and you!) have a healthy start.

What To Eat When You're Expecting

Now more than ever, a well-balanced diet should become a priority for an expecting mother. Not only is your own health a concern, but you're eating for two, or more, and the things you consume have a direct effect on the development of your baby.

It's important to keep your diet varied, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy are all important parts of a balanced diet, so be sure to have some of all of these groups. Eating foods that are high in folate or are fortified with folic acids can help to reduce the risk of birth defects. Foods such as asparagus, leafy green vegetables, broccoli and beans all have folate. Additionally, fruits like papaya, oranges, strawberries and cantaloupe are rich in folic acids.

Avoid sugars and juices as these will leave you feeling tired and drained, not to mention the general lack of nutrition in sugary snacks and drinks.

Good oral health begins early, and it begins with you! For more information on your child's oral health, and your own, please give our office a call. We look forward to meeting your new bundle of joy!
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
