If your child has mouth pain, you need to figure out what is causing the problem. Here's a guide to mouth pain in babies and toddlers.

Teething

Very few babies escape getting their first teeth without teething pain. If your baby is cranky, fussy, and running a slight fever, there's a chance they are teething. You might notice other teething signs, such as red or swollen gums, a lot of drooling, and pulling at their ears. You can soothe a baby's teething pain by massaging their gums, offering cold washcloths or teething rings for them to chew on, or feeding them cold items, such as popsicles or sorbet. You can try over-the-counter pain medication or numbing medication for gums.

Canker Sores

Canker sores can be very painful for babies and young children. Canker sores can be so severe that your baby might not want to eat or drink. You might notice a sore in their mouth that is white or gray, surrounded by a red border. Like teething pain, you can relieve canker sore pain with over-the-counter medication to help numb the pain of canker sores. Also, try and make sure you are feeding your child non-acidic foods, such as milk or cereal because they won't aggravate a canker sore.

Cavities

Babies are a lot of things, but they might also be a repository for tooth decay, especially if you haven't been brushing their teeth. In fact, babies who go to bed with a bottle or a sippy cup at night are at a higher risk for cavities. If a cavity is in the early stages, a dentist can quickly repair it. However, if a cavity isn't caught early, it can cause your young child a lot of pain. Once a dentist fixes the tooth, the pain will quickly disappear.

My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
