Is Mouthwash Safe For Children?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Fariba Mutschler
Is Mouthwash Safe For Children?Parents need to be aware of their children's threats when using mouthwash, even if it is beneficial to their oral health. Rinsing can be utterly risk-free if you follow a few simple guidelines.

At What Age Should My Child Start Using Mouthwash?

Children under the age of six should not use mouthwash. An adult should watch children beyond six to ensure their safety.

What is the significance of the age of six? A child's ability to properly rinse and spit is not entirely developed until at least two years old. Mouthwash can pose a health concern to children under 18, as they are more prone to swallowing it.

With the possibility of ingesting mouthwash, starting your child on mouthwash at an early age can lead to a dental problem that will badly impact their smile. Often, fluoride protects tooth enamel, but if a child swallows it or is overexposed to it during essential stages of development, it can leave white marks on their teeth.

What Is The Best Mouthwash For Children?

The type of mouthwash you are used to using may not be suitable for your children. In many antiseptic types of mouthwash, the alcohol content can be too much for your children to tolerate and could cause significant health problems if they ingest it.

Mouthwash that contains no alcohol should be your first choice. Mouthwashes specifically geared toward children are much better, though. Kids will like the bubblegum and grape flavors of these mouth rinses.

My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
