What Makes Your Child's Mouth Different Than an Adults Besides Size?

Posted on 12/10/2018 by Fariba Mutschler
What Makes Your Child's Mouth Different Than an Adults Besides Size? One of the questions we are often asked at our pediatric dental office is what the difference between the mouth of a child and the mouth of an adult is.

We could say that one is bigger than the other, but most people are already aware of that. They want to know more. These are the things that we can tell them.

Baby Teeth Vs. Adult Teeth

Most people are aware that they will have two sets of teeth in their lifetime. The baby teeth start developing in the fetus and begin to erupt from the gums around 4 to 6 months old and all the teeth are usually in by the time the infant is 12 months old. They will start to lose these tenth around the age of 7 or 8. There are 20 teeth in the full set of baby teeth, consisting of 10 upper teeth and 10 lower teeth.

The adult set of teeth has 32 teeth. The extra teeth are the bicuspids and the molars. The molars are also called the wisdom teeth. The bicuspids typically appear between the ages of 10 and 12 and the wisdom teeth grow in around 17 to 21 years of age.

What is not Different?

While it is important to know what is different between the adult and child's mouth, we also feel it is important to know what is the same. All the teeth that both children and adults have deserve the proper care. That means daily brushing and flossing.

Toothpaste is not something an infant needs to brush with, but anyone over the age of 2 will benefit from its use. It is also important for everyone to visit their dentist regularly. Teens and adults may turn to a family dentist, but young children will get the best care from a pediatric dentist.

If you want to know more about children's teeth and how they are different from the adult, call us at our office and ask a few questions, We are happy to answer anything you may want to know.
