Dentists Aren't Always Opposed to Pacifiers

Dentists Aren't Always Opposed to PacifiersHaving a baby is a wonderful experience that you will always treasure. At the same time, there are challenges that come with being a new parent, and one of them is dealing with inopportune crying at some of the worst times.

To address this, many parents use pacifiers to help keep the baby calmed and quiet. Unfortunately, some people believe that dentists discourage the use of pacifiers, and as a result, they cause themselves unnecessary frustration (to say nothing of the loss of sleep they suffer through).

We are not necessarily opposed to using pacifiers. In fact, in some cases, using a pacifier is preferable to allowing other methods of soothing such as letting the child suck his or her thumb.

Pacifiers and Tooth Development

The common thought is that dentists discourage the use of a pacifier of any sort because using one will cause the child's front teeth to jut forwards. However, this is not necessarily the case.

While we do not encourage using a pacifier for extended periods of time on a regular basis, intermittent use is just fine. Likewise, so long as the child is not spending a significant portion of each day using the pacifier, it is unlikely that it will affect his or her tooth alignment.

Types of Pacifiers

In addition, there are different types of pacifiers available. The ones that are made out of more rigid material tend to have more of a problematic impact on a child's bite development than the ones that are constructed of the more pliable material. Choose a pacifier that is as pliable as possible if you wish to minimize its effect on your child's teeth.

We are here to help you. If you have any questions about choosing the best pacifier for your child's teeth, please contact us.
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
